Ocular Coherance Tomography (OCT)
What is it?
A fast, painless scan using light to create detailed cross-sectional images of your retina and optic nerve.
What’s involved?
-
You rest your chin and focus on a light while the machine scans—only takes a few minutes.
-
Your eyes may be dilated for better imaging in some cases.
Why it matters:
-
Shows each layer of the retina in microscopic detail—think of it as an “optical ultrasound".
-
Detects early changes from conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic swelling, etc., often before symptoms appear.
-
Takes precise measurements—great for tracking over time.
Why it's worth having:
OCT gives a powerful, early warning system for sight-threatening conditions—catching trouble when treatment is most effective. Also helps to monitor side effects of certain medications eg Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquine), taken for Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
