Visual Fields (Perimetry)
Visual field testing maps what you can see around you while you stare straight ahead: your peripheral (side) vision.
During the test, you sit and focus on a central point. Lights appear in your peripheral vision, and you press a button whenever you spot one. Nothing touches your eye, and there are no drops for the standard test.
Visual field testing is essential for detecting glaucoma early, which often affects your peripheral vision before you notice anything. It can also help identify neurological issues such as stroke and some brain tumours, as well as other subtle visual field defects.
The test can reveal blind spots you may not have been aware of. It also helps monitor whether glaucoma medication is working by tracking changes over time.
We use the traditional ‘gold standard’ Humphrey Visual Field Analyser at our Castries clinic and a virtual field analyser in Rodney Bay.
